Lunch forums are held several times per year and provide great opportunities to catch up with other colleagues, meet new people, learn something new, and share ideas. Members receive details about upcoming forums and activities in email distributions, so be sure to become a member or keep your membership active.

LUNCHEONS

Recent topics and speakers have included:

· “The Federal Oil Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Rule: Updated and Recent Amendments to 40 CFR 112.” Presented by Mr. Peter Reich, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Oil Program Inspector.

· “Ordnance Program in Hawaii.” Presented by Mr. Charles Streck, Ordnance Program Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District, on March 7, 2007.

· “Residential Photovoltaics in Hawai‘i.” Presented by Mr. Andrew Keith on October 4, 2006.

· “Public Health Issues Associated with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.” Presented by Dr. Edward Laws, Director of the Center for Oceans and Human Health at U.H. and Dean of the School of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences at LSU, on August 16, 2006.

· “Public Health Issues Related to Ala Wai Sewage Spill.” Presented by Dr. Roger Fujioka, U.H. Water Resources Research Center, on May 31, 2006. Co-sponsored with the Hawaii Water Environment Association.

· 2006 Legislature Half Way Point: Which Bills Survived the March 9 Crossover? Which Bills Are Going to Pass this Year?” Presented by Senator Kalani English, Chair, Committee on Energy and Environment and International Affairs, and Representative Hermina Morita, Chair, Energy and Environmental Protection, on March 13, 2006. Co-sponsored with the Chamber of Commerce.

· “A Review of the Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning Project, with Emphasis on Potential Environmental Effects.” Presented by Mr. George Krasnick, Senior Associate at TEC Inc., and Dr. David Rezachek, Rezachek & Associates, on August 2005.

· “Hawai‘i’s Voluntary Response Program, An Update.” Presented by Mr. Davis Bernstein of the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health’s Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office, Voluntary Response Program, on May 24, 2005.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
 

· NEW! The HAEP Release Response Working Group began meeting in July 2006 to provide an informal setting for open discussions between DOH and consultants working on site investigations and remediation. DOH Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response (HEER) Office representatives, Davis Bernstein, Voluntary Response Program (VRP) & Brownfield’s Program Manager, and Fenix Grange, Site Discovery, Assessment and Remediation (SDAR) Section Manager, are helping to facilitate these discussions. The first meeting topic was “Effective Use of Multi-increment Sampling.” Contact Ms. Jodie Pang at jpang@eaest.com for more information.

· HAEP is a business affiliate member of Rebuild Hawai‘i Consortium, which identifies approaches to conserve and save energy.

· HAEP members support the Hawai‘i State Science & Engineering Fair by serving as judges for the junior high and high school divisions. Monetary prizes are also provided by HAEP.

· Annual meetings are held in November and include good food, drinks, and camaraderie.
